Shift RSVP is a Chrome extension that displays webpage text you deliberately select, one word at a time. Reading happens locally. A separate, optional license check is used only to restore paid customization.

Information Shift RSVP handles

Shift RSVP handles the text you select on a webpage after you invoke the extension. Depending on what you select, that text could contain website content, personal communications, or other information you chose to highlight.

Shift RSVP stores reading preferences — speed in words per minute, reading font, color theme, and Auto/Light/Dark appearance — in Chrome’s local extension storage. Auto reads the browser’s local prefers-color-scheme result; that result is not transmitted or stored separately.

Shift RSVP stores shiftRsvpDailyUsage, containing only the local calendar date and a count capped at three, to enforce the free tier’s three daily reading runs. It contains no selected text, URL, reading position, or history and is never transmitted.

If you choose to activate paid customization, Shift RSVP also handles the Gumroad license key you enter. A successful check stores the key and a minimal local record containing only whether the entitlement is valid, when it was checked, and that Gumroad was the source.

Shift RSVP does not collect page URLs, browsing history, reading history, saved passages, account profiles, cookies, form values, analytics identifiers, crash telemetry, buyer email, order details, or payment-card information.

How information is used

Selected text is tokenized and shown in the reader overlay in the current tab. It is kept in memory only while needed for that reading session. Stored preferences restore the reader’s pace and appearance in the same Chrome profile.

A license key is used only to determine whether the one-time Shift RSVP customization purchase is valid. It is never combined with selected text or page context.

Storage and retention

Selected text is not written to storage. It disappears from Shift RSVP when the reader closes, the page navigates or closes, the tab is destroyed, or a new selection replaces it.

Reading preferences, the daily date-and-count record, the license key you provide, and the minimal entitlement record remain in chrome.storage.local until they are replaced, Chrome clears the extension’s data, or Shift RSVP is removed. A new local calendar day replaces the prior daily count when the next free run begins. Removing Shift RSVP removes all local values. Shift RSVP does not run its own purchase database.

Transmission and sharing

Shift RSVP never transmits selected text, page URLs, reading preferences, daily usage, reading history, or playback state.

When you explicitly verify a license key, or when an existing paid entitlement is due for a periodic recheck, the extension sends only that key to https://shift-rsvp-licence.thesanderbell.workers.dev/. The Shift RSVP Cloudflare Worker sends the key and Shift RSVP’s Gumroad product ID to Gumroad’s license-verification API. The Worker reduces Gumroad’s response to a valid/invalid result and does not return buyer or order details to the extension. Gumroad processes purchases and license verification under its own terms and privacy practices; Cloudflare provides the Worker infrastructure.

Shift RSVP does not sell personal information or use information for advertising, profiling, credit decisions, or purposes unrelated to reading selected text and validating the optional customization entitlement.

Permissions

  • activeTab grants temporary access to the page only after a direct user gesture.
  • scripting places the packaged reader on that active page.
  • storage saves reading preferences, the local daily-run counter, and, when provided, the Gumroad key and minimal entitlement locally.
  • contextMenus adds a command that appears only for selected text.
  • The exact host permission for the Shift RSVP license Worker permits the service worker to verify a license. It does not give that service access to webpages.

Shift RSVP also declares a packaged content script on ordinary HTTP(S) pages so Shift+R can open a readable current selection. Chrome does not allow Shift-only extension commands. The script runs in an isolated environment, ignores the shortcut while editing or without a readable selection, does not scan the document, and does not make license requests.

Your choices

You control what Shift RSVP reads by choosing what to select and when to invoke it. Close the reader to end the current session. The free tier includes three reading runs per local day; a one-time lifetime purchase removes that limit and unlocks customization. Remove Shift RSVP or clear its extension data to remove local preferences, daily usage, and the cached key.

Children

Shift RSVP is a general reading utility and is not directed to children. It does not create Shift RSVP accounts or knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes

If Shift RSVP’s data practices change, this policy and the Chrome Web Store disclosure will be updated before the change is released. A material change will be disclosed in the product where required.
